Most of us think that anxiety and overwhelm are bad things.
We have been conditioned to believe that there must be something wrong with us if we feel anxious, or if we can’t seem to get a grip of things in life. Clearly we are weak, pathetic, useless and not like everyone else….PLUS, we need to be fixed!
What if anxiety was actually your friend and it was asking you to make more authentic and aligned choices? For all these months or years it had simply been keeping you safe and away from the people, places and activities that didn’t serve you!
If you are a highly sensitive person, there will be certain situations, environments and people that put your whole physical body and mind on red alert… hence the reason people have panic/anxiety attacks, the mind and body wants to get away from there (or avoid being there in the first place) and fast! We are in sensory overload, because we take in so much more of the world than the average person.
Many people think that anxiety is just about fear and sometimes it can be, but often it is about protecting yourself from what you know doesn’t serve you…. BUT, you are too scared to honestly express to others, or even to yourself what you want and need. You don’t want the extra attention on you, or to deal with people trying to talk you round, or worse think you are weird and boring!
I vividly remember being on holiday with my then best friend and we had a huge falling out…. mainly because after 2 big nights out I needed time on my own to recharge and to recover from a pounding headache and she just couldn’t understand it at all. She started repeatedly shouting at me (and anyone else who would listen) that I was boring, I had ruined her night… and it wasn’t fair on her!!!
This was nearly 17 years ago, but ever since, I have had this fear that maybe I am boring….I find beauty in the simplest of places, I am moved by the smallest of things, I think deeply about people and the world and I look for the deeper meaning in our very existence… maybe that is boring to some people, but I can spend hours on my own and never be bored! I love dancing and nights out as much as the next person, but I know my limits and when I get to that place of being over stimulated…. I go home! Only now looking back can I see what I used to do and more importantly why!
